Many fans of the Babylon 5 TV Series will agree that the single most important element of the show that kept us coming back for more was the mystery of the Vorlons and the Shadows. Two races of beings that were so advanced they no longer had material bodies. They were beings of light that placed their life energy into encounter suits to enable them to interact with the lesser races, with beings like us.

This mystery was the thread that ran through the entire series and it was this that kept many of us die hard science fiction fans coming back again and again for more. We eventually learn that the Vorlons and the Shadows were billions of years ahead of us. That they were in fact among the "first ones" to come into existence in our galaxy.

As a species they barely even noticed us most of the times, no more than we would acknowledge an insect. And yet they were interested in the lesser races to a small degree but for what purpose? Trying to figure out this secret is what engaged many of the viewers. Like reading a great mystery novel we tried to solve the riddle before reaching the end. It soon became evident that the Vorlons and the Shadows were aware of each other but were not on speaking terms, as if there was a great rift between them.

The Vorlons made their presence known first to a small number of select individuals from the Minbari and Human races, but that seemed to be the extent of their involvement with the lesser races. They limited their contact to nothing more than an advisory role, to warn us of a time when chaos and war would threaten the very existence of our race, but they did not want to get involved directly. They only wanted us to prepare ourselves.

On the other hand, the Shadows would get involved directly. They also chose a select number of individuals from certain races with whom they made their pawns. The Shadows would eagerly participate in tipping the balance in any territorial dispute of the lesser races, especially if it resulted in an increase in hostilities. Their ships were billions of years ahead of anything else in the galaxy and they seemed to be indestructible.

But where was all this going? Why did races as advanced as the Vorlons and the Shadows care at all about the outcome of the petty wars between the inferior races? As it turns out it was a difference between ideologies. The Vorlons embraced order and discipline over conflict, it is what worked for them, while the Shadows embraced chaos and war because that is what had worked for them in their development. Like all beings with an over-inflated sense of self-importance, the Vorlons and the Shadows wanted the lesser races to chose their way. In the end, what did the lesser races chose? Or did we chose at all? To find out the answer to that you would have to watch the entire series.

How Violinists Can Polish Up Trills

This morning I was looking forward to getting my daughter off to school, having a nice, full practice session, and then sitting down to write.

It didn't happen that way.

To make a long story short, I just finished a penmanship lesson with my daughter, who convinced me that her 'cold' was worthy of a day away from school. It doesn't mean we sit around in front of a tv all day. No, we'll turn our attention to reading.

So my practice session will have to wait.

Here's the deal with trills. I believe that the ultimate speed at which you are able to trill, is determined by God.

But even more importantly, the Clarity, and ultimately the effectiveness of our trill, is up to you.

Now there are folks out there who, when you say 'trill', give the impression someone just pressed a doorbell. It's that fast and effortless.

Yet often the challenge for these people is getting control or creating variety to it - a blazingly fast trill can be out of character in some music - a Mozart Andante being one good example.

Most of us are confronted with the opposite problem - namely how to develop the finger reflex to convey an impression of something more.

There are two things that enable you to do this - technique and smart planning.

On the technical side you must resist the urge to press the vibrato into service in an attempt to amplify the finger's natural reflex. Invariably the result of this will be a muddy, featureless blur. I can guarantee no one is going to be fooled or impressed.

The best approach is always to stay with the finger - keeping it as light and clean as it can possibly be. The more relaxed you are, the better will be the result.

What you CAN do, after you've isolated the finger motion to a high degree, is experiment with the height you take it above the string. Yet in doing so you must remember to keep the hand relaxed, otherwise it will revert back into a knot of frustration.

The other side of the trill coin involves planning.

If you focus on a given pre-determined of oscillations for the trill - assuming it's duration is a beat or less, and allow yourself to visualize the entire event each time you arrive to it, you may find yourself 'tricking' your finger into doing more than you thought possible.

This requires patience, relaxation and focus - yet I am constantly surprised by the results I get from doing just this.

There are countless etudes and studies devoted to trills. Yet none are more enjoyable and satisfying than those found in Kreutzer. In volume 2 of 'Kreutzer for Violin Mastery' I take you through all manner of possibilities - measured, unmeasured, prepared, with terminations and without terminations.

There are some players who believe in practicing trills using various rhythms. I haven't mentioned this here because I don't feel they really produce the results I'm after. Kreutzer does.

Though challenging indeed, these Kreutzer etudes can really clean and polish a trill beautifully.
